Casual Sequins

Sequins, oh sequins...such an elegant addition to a garment. Women love sequins. And naturally so. I mean, it is no secret that chicks dig pretty, shiny things. And boy are they pretty... and oh so shiny. Up until maybe the last few years, I always associated sequins with the tacky, strippery 80's pieces you find in the thrift shops. This might have something to do with the fact that when I was younger, I went to a thrift shop with my grandfather and stumbled upon this horrible, stretchy, sequined... thing. I'm not sure if it was a skirt, tube top, or headband, really, but what I do know is that it 1. smelled like cigarette smoke, and 2. had been stretched way beyond its limits. So, thanks to this smokey, stretched out sartorial nightmare (which probably belonged to a prostitute,) sequins always sort of had a bad rap with me. Conversely, I also associated sequins with over the top, fancy parties that I would never be invited to, because quite honestly, I don't have many friends.

Many years later, maturity and a growing, unhealthy love for J Crew, have brought me to this grown up, updated take on sequins: The J Crew Cluster Sequin Tee. When I saw this, I didn't picture myself dancing in a thong and eight inch stiletto heels on a stage while a Motley Crue song plays in the background. I didn't imagine myself at an over the top cocktail party, smoking one of those long cigarette things while fake laughing at someone's awful jokes and sipping champagne. My first inclination was that I wanted to wear this top with some sort of chambray (I pictured a chambray blazer, but this button down shirt will suffice) and denim. Totally casual. Totally wearable.

So, I am here today to prove to any other skeptics that sequins can be just as casual as, say, a pair of sneakers and jeans (at 12 pm for lunch and froyo.)

P.s. I am thinking of doing a giveaway soon for my lovely followers, so I have been compiling a list of items to include. I think it's going to be a small collection of some of my favorite, "can't live without" products. So, if you have any suggestions for products I have talked about in past posts that you would like to see in the giveaway, let me know in the comments!

  2. Amber, this outfit is adorable! I would've never thought to pair a chambray top and sequin tee together, but let me say, you rock it girl! I know what you mean about sequins though- I have a sequin skirt and I always think I have to wear it for a special occasion. Not anymore! :)

    1. Yes! I think I actually prefer the non fussy, casual sequin look to a more dressed up, elegant one.
