When Life Gives You Lemons...

I might have mentioned this before, but I have always had this serious self consciousness involving my freckles. Specifically the ones covering my pale arms. When I was in the second grade, a little boy in my class told me I looked like somebody threw poop at me from behind a screen door. I was never a fan and that probably made it worse. So, up until a couple of years ago, I would have never worn a dress like this, exposing so much of them, in fact, all of them. Why the change? Well, as an adult, I have sort of figured a few things out. Not much, but a few things.

One of them is that when life gives you lemons, you gotta make lemonade (and probably add some vodka.) So, with that being said, one day in my adult life, I figured eff it. I could have much bigger issues than pale, freckly arms. I say flaunt em, baby! Some people love freckles and wish they had them too. Sure, I might slather on the faux tan like there's no tomorrow, but, hell I still flaunt those babies.

Whether you're overweight, too thin, too "boyishly" shaped, you have acne, your hair never looks how you want it to, etc, you have to just make the best of it. Sure, you can try to change it, but you can only look how your genes really intended for you to look. No, my skin will never look like Jessica Alba's and my hair will never look like a Victoria's Secret model's. My body will never look like Scarlett Johanson's. I will always be a 5'1" shrimp with pale skin, freckles, and a giant Brillo Pad on my head.  But, I am figuring out that that's ok. You have to do the best with what you've got. Lemonade, people. Lemonade.

  1. I'm sure that comment was quite traumatic as a child and I feel for mini-you but that kid was pretty creative with his insult!

    1. Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it! Sometimes I think it's hard to be comfortable with ourselves when all you see in the media is half naked, skinny, big breasted women with perfect hair and makeup. We just have to remember all the good things we have going for ourselves :)

  3. I love your post! It is so true, but often hard to stop being so critical of ones own flaws. I think that you are absolutely adorable. I'm going to try thinking like you, and love me for me. I guess ones never to old to start believing in themselves. Thank you so much for your advise, and your awesome blogs.

  4. What a great post! I feel ya on the being critical about one's "flaws," I'm starting to accept more and more that I'm not going to look like the supermodels and actresses out there. Each person is beautiful in their own way!

  6. Oh my goodness, I'm dying over those sandals! You are totally right, though. There is always gonna be something you won't like about yourself but you just have to focus on the positiv and play up those features!

  7. I think your freckles are beautiful! I always wanted more freckles like that, I don't get them until summer when I try to tan. Instead of tanning I just turn into one giant brown freckle.

You are so right, we have to make do with who we are and there is everything right about that.

  8. Hey there! Love this! I think it's something especially us women need to hear every once in a while! I am fair skinned like you and it always bothered me that my whole family could tan and I couldn't so I hated wearing shorts that revealed my glow in the dark legs, but I've realized it's not going to change and just to embrace it! Love that dress!

  13. Well I'll have you know that when I was 8 I desperately wanted freckles, specifically on my cheeks. The Parent Trap had just come out, and I thought Lindsay Lohan's freckles were the cutest little things. I wanted them on my face. I remember grabbing my mom's brownish lip pencils (oh, the 90's) and drawing little dots on my face, hoping that with enough repetition my skin would absorb them and start producing them on its own. We all want what we can't have don't we? Especially as children.

P.S. I still think freckles are cute but I no longer draw them on my face. I do sometimes see a new one pop up on my shoulders and arms every now and then, but I freak out because I know in my case they're signs of sun damage! Yikes.
